Macular degeneration is the most common
cause of blindness in Australia but new research suggests avoiding
vegetable oils could prevent the condition. It's
spreading like a disease - a blindness called macular degeneration
affecting at least 800,000 Australians and costing $1.5 billion per
year in health care. But
with the latest research pointing to vegetable oils as the main
culprit, it's possible we may be able to fend off this disease by
simply changing our diets.
You might not cook with vegetable or canola oil but take a look at the
ingredients in any sauce, dip, bread, margarine or biscuit - any
processed food for that matter. Vegetable oil is hidden in all of them.
Most of us have been consuming these processed foods from the time we

"[The research] showed that people eating vegetable oil got
the disease twice as commonly as the people who didn't,"
Beaumont said. "Even
more convincing was a prospective study where they looked at patients
with the disease and those eating too much vegetable oil progressed at
3.8 times the rate of those eating a little vegetable oil. You look at
bread, they make it on margarine, you look at currants and they've gone
and sprayed vegetable oil on them to stop them from sticking, you go
and try and get tinned fish and they've put it in vegetable oil. So
yes, it's become ubiquitous, it's crept right into our food chain and
you hardly know you're eating it."
Gwen Oliver was diagnosed with macular
degeneration two years ago. She was astonished when Dr Beaumont told
her to steer clear of vegetable oils and only cook with extra virgin
olive oil. "I was surprised about diet and all the products that
we've been eating in the past,"
Ms Oliver said. "We've always
had it advertised that vegetable oil was far better for us."

Dr Beaumont says he doesn't envisage vegetable oil being removed from
all foods, but says there should be a consumer health warning. "I
think we have to have a warning on the packages similar to a warning of
a cigarette package: 'vegetable oil can lead to macular degeneration',"
The major reason for blindness in
Australia 30 years ago was diabetes and it was rare to find macular
degeneration. Today the condition has overtaken diabetes five-fold and
is now the leading cause of loss of vision in Australia. Two-thirds of
those who lose their vision are blind due to macular degeneration. "I've
seen an exponential rise from the early 1970s through to the 1990s,"
Dr Beaumont said. "If we look at Japan 40 years ago the disease was
rare, now it's common. I don't think there's any doubt we have an

Dr Beaumont said. When
macular degeneration strikes, patients like Gwen Oliver are first given
laser therapy to help stem the bleeding. They're also told to look at a
chart daily and if they see any difference in the lines on the charts -
such as a straight line looking bent - it's back to Dr Beaumont for
for Jillian Price, laser therapy didn't work. Her last chance is a
cutting edge treatment called photodynamic therapy. It doesn't look
like much but it causes plenty to happen inside the body. "You
inject a chemical that slowly accumulates in that blood vessel and
doesn't accumulate in normal tissues,"
Dr Beaumont said. "And
then you shine a light on the eye and it selectively activates that
chemical that shuts down the abnormal tissue and [does] not damage the
For Jillian Price, the disease has disabled her life as an
active woman. "Two months is very fast to lose so much sight; I've
lost a lot of my independence,"
Ms Price said. "The
distance, everything is distorted, getting on the buses, shopping is
very hard, I can't read labels any more. One day I was doing crosswords
and the next day I couldn't."
A specialist told Colin Noble he'd be
blind within 18 months. Luckily Colin sought a second opinion and today
he's one of the lucky 10 per cent who regain vision after having
photodynamic therapy. "Usually the treatment merely stops or slows
down the degeneration. It's a miracle, I'm so grateful for this man,"
Mr Noble said. "It's
had a big effect on my life and my family's life … it's allowed me to
do so many things. I can still tie a fish hook, important things like
that … I'm a very lucky bloke."
Dr Beaumont has lobbied the federal Health Department to help fund this
huge problem, but to date nothing has happened. "I think they
should move fairly urgently,"
he said. "I don't think we can
afford to delay in informing the public about something which can be
affecting their vision."

Grocery Council - the voice of the food manufacturers who use vegetable
oil - they had nothing to say, except that they were waiting to hear
more evidence linking vegetable oil and macular degeneration. "There
are hundreds of thousands of Australians waiting for that advice,"
Dr Beaumont said. "And I think the government has to move quickly."

WASHINGTON -- The Food and Drug Administration on Friday ordered that all antidepressants carry "black box" warnings that they "increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior" in children who take them.
Patients and their parents will be given medication guides that include the warning with each new prescription or refill.
Dr. Lester Crawford, acting FDA commissioner, said the agency based its decision on the "latest and best science."
The world's oceans are now so saturated with noise that whales and other marine mammals are dying, biologists say.
The UK's Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society is launching a campaign, Oceans of Noise, to tackle what it says is the increasing problem of noise pollution.
It says key sources of undersea noise are the search for oil and gas, and the use of low-frequency military sonars.
Manufacturers are acutely aware that many consumers would prefer not to have MSG (1) in their food.(2) Some manufacturers have responded by using "clean labels," i.e., labels that contain only ingredient names they think consumers will not recognize as containing MSG -- names such as "hydrolyzed soy protein." Others advertise "No MSG," "No MSG Added," or "No Added MSG," even though their products contain MSG.
Most offenders are small processors who are possibly being misguided by the FDA, the USDA, and/or consultants. Hain and Campbell's, both large companies, are among those who have been alerted to both the deception that they are perpetrating and the illegality of what they are doing, yet continue with what the FDA has termed deceptive and misleading labeling.

Dupont recently defended its position about partially complying with federal reporting guidelines on the health risks of a key ingredient found in Teflon.
The chemical giant has been criticized on many sides for its decision not to release all the information it compiled on perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a soap-like ingredient used in making non-stick surfaces and materials. EATING vegetables like broccoli and spinach may help older women retain some memory abilities later on, while avoiding obesity in middle age lowers the risk of later Alzheimer's disease in both sexes, new studies suggest.
The work mirrors prior evidence that people may help keep their brains healthy by following standard health advice, including things like staying active and keeping cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure under control.
In fact, one of the new studies found evidence that obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure in middle age each added substantially to the risk of developing Alzheimer's or other dementia later on.

I wondered if there could be an actual chemical causing the massive
obesity epidemic, so did a friend of mine, John Erb. He was a research
assistant at the University of Waterloo, and spent years working for
the government. He made an amazing discovery while going through
scientific journals for a book he was writing called The Slow Poisoning
of America. In hundreds of studies around the world, scientists were
creating obese mice. and rats to use in diet or diabetes test studies.
No strain of rat or mice is naturally obese, so the scientists have
to create them. They make these morbidly obese creatures by injecting
them with MSG when they are first born. The MSG triples the amount of
insulin the pancreas creates, causing rats (and humans?) to become
obese They even have a title for the race of fat rodents they create:
"MSG-Treated Rats" MSG?
I was shocked too. I went to my kitchen, checking the cupboards and
the fridge. MSG was in everything! The Campbell's soups, the Hostess
Doritos, the Lays flavored potato chips, Top Ramen, Betty Crocker
Hamburger Helper, Heinz canned gravy, Swanson frozen prepared meals,
Kraft salad dressings, especially the 'healthy low fat' ones. The items
that didn't have MSG had something called Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein,
which is just another name for Monosodium
Glutamate. It was shocking to see just how many of the foods we
feed our children everyday are filled with this stuff. They hide MSG
under many different names in order to fool those who catch on.
But it didn't stop there. When our family went out to eat, we
started asking at the restaurants what menu items had MSG. Many
employees, even the managers, swore they didn't use MSG. But when we
ask for the ingredient list, which they grudgingly provided, sure
enough MSG and Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein were everywhere. Burger
King, McDonalds, Wendy's, Taco Bell, every restaurant, even the sit
down ones like TGIF, Chilis', Applebees and Denny's use MSG in
abundance. Kentucky Fried Chicken seemed to be the WORST offender: MSG
was in every chicken dish, salad dressing and gravy. No wonder I loved
to eat that coating on the skin, their secret spice was MSG!
So why is MSG in so may of the foods we eat? Is it a preservative or
a vitamin? Not according to my friend John. In the book he wrote, an
expose of the food additive industry called The Slow Poisoning of
he said that MSG is added to food for the addictive effect it has on

explains that the reason they add it to food is to make people eat
more. A study of elderly people showed that people eat more of the

The difference between margarine and butter?
Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.
Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter according to
a recent Harvard Medical Study. Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods. Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added! Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods. Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

- Very high in Trans Fatty Acids...

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC...This fact alone was enough to have me
avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).
YOU can try this yourself: purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things: no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something) ... it does not rot or smell differently...because it has no nutritional value, nothing will grow on it...even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Sperm counts are falling and cancer levels are rising. Something is very wrong somewhere, but what? The answer, says Hilary Freeman, may be uncomfortably close to home ... Yesterday, millions of Britons woke up to the news that our daily personal hygiene routines could be making us ill. A study at the University of Reading linked chemicals called parabens in underarm deodorants with a possible breast-cancer risk, after discovering traces of parabens - preservatives thought to mimic oestrogens - in human breast tumour samples.
They also contain aluminium and the armpit is a very sensitive and porous membrane that can absorb it. Aluminium is also in shampoo - WHY? 1. Tooth cavities will be ended simply by rinsing acids off the teeth. ACIDS ALONE EAT THE ENAMEL. There would be no cavities in the world if all people rinsed acids from their teeth promptly. Just sip water, milk or other liquid while eating. Water reacts with acids.
2. Foods and drinks, other than those containing acids, have no action on tooth enamel. SUGARS HAVE NO ACTION ON THE ENAMEL.
3. Bacteria cannot damage the enamel (calcium hydroxy phosphate). There is no such thing as decay of the enamel since bacteria require carbon and hydrogen to live. Billions of human and animal remains show teeth and bones are resistant to earth-bound organisms.
4. Teeth reenamalize when clean. TO MAKE TEETH CL EAN ONE BRUSHES WITH ANY BAR SOAP. ( There are good toothpastes at the health food stores. Check the ingredients before buying. Don't get anything with glycerine in it.) Soap washes off in just 2 rinses. What about toothpastes? Glycerine in all tooth pastes is so sticky that it takes 27 washes to get it off. Teeth brushed with any toothpaste are coated with a film and CANNOT PROPERLY REENAMELIZE.
5. Taking calcium and phosphate in the diet results in reenamelization of the teeth, but only when they are clean. Bar soap does a perfect job in cleaning the surface. The enamel thickens and becomes less sensitive. Adenosine diphosphatase furnishes phosphate to teeth.
6. Gums are disinfected by brushing with any bar soap. Not only bacteria and viruses are destroyed promptly by small amounts of soap in water, but also white flies and aphids. Gardeners: Spray 1 tsp of dishwashing soap in 1 gallon of water to kill white flies and aphids.
7. Plaque, a poorly formed crystal stuck to the bottom of the enamel, is prevented and eventually removed by brushing with bar soap. Dental procedures to get the badly formed crystals off dig holes through the enamel. These cavities catch food and cause gum infection.
8. Prevention of plaque retards gum pockets. Gum pockets are formed as the plaque pushes the gums away from the teeth. Gum pockets, from 1 to 8 mm deep, are also formed by FLUORIDE, which severs the protein molecules adhering the gums to the teeth. SOAP PREVENTS GINGIVITIS caused by bacteria which is lodged in the gum pockets.
9. VITAMIN C AND PHOSPHATE help knit the gums back to the teeth. Pressing against the gums with fingers forces adhesive materials from the gums onto the teeth, which helps the process. Abscesses can be offset by holding Cepacol (14% alcohol) in the mouth 5 minutes.
